Frequently Asked Questions about
the Economic Impact of Moisture
|
Q. |
Why is
accurate moisture testing important in Dollars and Cents?
|
|
A. |
1.
If you Over Dry
15% Vs 14%
Excess energy to go $.04/Bu
Weight loss at 56 LB $.07/Bu
(@$5.50/bu) $.11/Bu
2.
If you Under Dry and attempt long term
storage
Dockage
Probable damage/Blue Eye Mold
Higher probability of Bug Damage
If you overdry 1% your shrink, energy,
average damage=total dollars
10,000 bushel = $1,100.00
30,000 bushel = $3,300.00
50,000 bushel = $5,500.00
70,000 bushel = $7,700.00
100,000 bushel = $11,000.00
3.
Comfort of knowing what you are harvesting. |

Q. |
Why is it
so difficult to test HOT GRAIN? |
|
A. |
Temperature will transition
very quickly to room temperature from the extremes. The farther from
ambient temperature the faster the movement and visa versa, the closer
to ambient temperature the slower the movement.
Many testers do not get an accurate
temperature, hence not an accurate moisture test.
When grain is dryed, it drys from the
outside in. In other words, the outside is dryer than the inside. Some
moisture meters do a better job of "looking all the way through" than
others. |
|
Q. |
On freshly
harvested grain, why does a sample test dryer in the beginning than
after it has set for a period of time in a sealed container?
|
|
A. |
Unstable grain "Newly Harvested",
if you tested each individual kernel, you would find a wide range of
moistures until the sample has sat long enough to stabilize. Again,
some testers are better at "looking through and detecting all or most
of the moisture" than others. |
